In Capernaum,\u00a0homebase for\u00a0Jesus’ family and closest disciples, the residents live in a rare tension. They, at\u00a0least their leaders,\u00a0must determine whether to silence Jesus.<\/p>\n
The Hebrew Law states that from time to time prophets will make predictions and\u00a0perform miracles\u00a0and then\u00a0propose worship of\u00a0previously\u00a0unknown\u00a0gods … as a test of loyalty. The penalty for this mutiny is death by stoning. (Deut 13:1-11)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Throughout human history in culture after culture, mutineers and traitors receive\u00a0the stiffest legal penalties. The Hebrew law is no different. But for the people of Capernaum, the law continues:<\/p>\n
If that prophet-scoundrel leads his neighbors\u00a0\u00a0to worship other gods, if they all conspire together, then\u00a0the town must receive the mutiny-punishment as well. (Deut. 13:12-17)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Conspiracy to commit treason is treason and receives treason’s penalty. Rules always sound so clean and forceful when read from the rulebook. But on the ground in human experience, there are always complicating factors.
